OpenAI launches ‘Grid Protectors Program’ to reduce data center electricity demand when the US grid is under strain

OpenAI has launched a plan to reduce the impact of its data centers on the US grid.. The non-binding ‘Grid Protectors Program’ aims to reduce electricity demand from its future data center campuses when the grid is under strain.. – OpenAI. “With US data center capacity projected to exceed 100GW by 2030, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen the electric grid by building campuses that can adjust their power use when communities need it most,” the company said..

OpenAI called such efforts an “ambition,” rather than a set policy. “The arrangements will differ by location, and we will share additional commitments as they are finalized,” it added.. The company plans to work with utilities, regulators, and policymakers on the program.

It could include helping grid operators supply power from on-site generation or storage, and using batteries and power controls to smooth demand fluctuations.. OpenAI pointed to a deal it signed with Georgia Power to support a data center, under which the generative AI firm has committed to paying the full cost of the infrastructure required to serve it..

In addition, OpenAI said it will provide up to 1GW of flexible demand response.. “Data centers are paying more so families and small businesses can pay less, and our goal with every contract we sign under this framework is to deliver value for them,” Kim Greene, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power, said at the time.. In January, OpenAI pledged to “pay its own way” to power Stargate data centers..

Data center energy use and the impact on local electricity prices have been a focus of local opposition across the US. Data center opposition movements have played a strong part in the US midterm elections, underway today.. 13 May 2026
