Gigawatt-scale data center campus proposed in Kansas

A large data center campus is under consideration in Kansas. This month, the Flint Hills Digital Campus was revealed, situated near Emporia in Lyon County. It may cover up to 1,000 acres in Emporia’s Industrial Park IV.

Emporia is located approximately 100 miles southwest of Kansas City. The campus will consist of both a ‘dedicated grid infrastructure’ and ‘on-site generation’, as stated on the project’s dedicated website; however, the complete details have not been disclosed.

The City of Emporia is currently reviewing a proposal by Kanza Park Place, LLC to establish a Digital Infrastructure Overlay District (DI-O) and corresponding annexation, zoning requests, and policy proposals. Local landowner Gary Pinkston, along with Kanza Park, is proposing the project.

In an open letter on the project website, Pinkston states, “The Flint Hills Digital Campus offers a chance to tackle these challenges while positioning this area for the future.” He adds, “The project has the potential to draw substantial private investment, create thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent jobs, offer opportunities for local businesses, and considerably expand the county’s tax base.” Local news reports indicate that discussions concerning the project have been taking place since the previous year. Garrett Nordstrom of Kanza Park Place LLC states, “The Flint Hills Digital Campus offers a chance to involve the community in dialogues regarding the future of economic progress, technological infrastructure, workforce expansion, and long-term regional viability.” Nordstrom invites public participation throughout the planning phase and expresses eagerness to maintain communication with residents, businesses, local administrations, and regional collaborators.
