Proposed data center outside Calgary, Canada, withdrawn by developer

A proposed data center outside Calgary, Canada, has been withdrawn by its developer.

It was revealed at the June 9 Rocky View County Council Meeting that Kalina Distributed Power, the Canadian subsidiary of Australia-based Kalina Power behind the Lone Pine Energy Centre project near the cities of Airdrie, had withdrawn its proposal.

Kalina’s withdrawal notice is dated April 24, 2026, according to the agenda for the June 9 council meeting.

The proposal concerned a land parcel west of the junction of Township Road 280 and Highway 791, and Kalina was looking to build a data center as well as a 200MW gas-fired power generation project.

Kalina’s withdrawal notice said that opposition to the proposal was the main reason for its decision.

“As an Alberta-based company committed to responsible power development, we have engaged with the community and taken their feedback into account. Accordingly, we are not proceeding with our proposal to develop the project on the above-mentioned site,” reads the email.

“As a result, we are withdrawing the project from the current land use redistricting pre-application process and will engage in further discussions with the County, including the relocation of the project.”

Airdrie is located around 35km (22miles) north of Calgary, which is the largest city in the province of Alberta.

Kalina says that it is developing a portfolio of approximately 2GW of energy projects to power data centers that will utilize “200MW Combined Cycle (“CC”) Gas Power Plants with optional Carbon Capture and Sequestration.”

These projects are all located in Alberta.

Kalina also says that it has been permitted to construct and operate a 64MW, 17-acre gas power plant in Saddle Hills, a district on Alberta’s border with British Columbia.

Back in February 2025, the company also partnered with AI data center developer Crusoe to develop AI data centers powered by natural gas power plants in the province.
