Bitcoin mining and high-performance computing firm Bitdeer Technologies Group has broken ground on a new energy and digital infrastructure facility in Alberta, Canada.<\/p>\n

The Singapore-based company said the project, located near Fox Creek, will pair a 101MW on-site natural gas power plant with a data center offering around 100MW of computing capacity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bitdeer said the US$155 million (CA$214m) project is expected to energize in the second quarter of 2027. The facility is being developed on a 7.7-hectare\/19-acre site approximately 1.5km from the Town of Fox Creek, in the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16.<\/p>\n

Under Alberta\u2019s bring-your-own-generation framework, the data center will be powered directly by the on-site gas plant rather than drawing its operating electricity from the provincial grid.<\/p>\n

Bitdeer said the power plant will remain connected to Alberta\u2019s electricity system and will have the ability to curtail computing workloads and export power back to the grid during periods of peak demand or grid stress.<\/p>\n

The company said the site will initially support Bitcoin mining, while retaining flexibility to support future high-performance computing workloads, including AI applications.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s groundbreaking marks the beginning of our long-term presence in Canada,\u201d said Jihan Wu, chairman and CEO of Bitdeer.<\/p>\n

Wu said Bitdeer chose Alberta and Fox Creek because of the region\u2019s regulatory framework, energy resources, skilled workforce, and openness to industrial investment.<\/p>\n

Bitdeer said the project is expected to create around 300 construction jobs and 30 permanent positions, with priority placed on Alberta-based contractors and local hiring.<\/p>\n

The company said the facility will use a closed-loop dry-cooling system with no water withdrawal from nearby bodies of water. It also plans to deploy a system to capture and utilize carbon dioxide emissions from the on-site power generation, which Bitdeer said is intended to reduce the facility\u2019s carbon intensity and offset applicable Canadian carbon obligations.<\/p>\n

The groundbreaking follows Bitdeer\u2019s February 2025 acquisition of the fully licensed and permitted Fox Creek site and gas-fired power project from Kiwetinohk Energy Corp. The company paid $21.7m in cash for the project, which had previously been approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission.<\/p>\n

At the time, Bitdeer said the site included permits to construct an on-site natural gas power plant and approval for a grid interconnection with the Alberta Electric System Operator. The company previously expected the site to be energized in late 2026.<\/p>\n

The updated construction announcement moves the expected energization date to Q2 2027.<\/p>\n

Bitdeer is one of several Bitcoin mining firms attempting to vertically integrate power generation and computing infrastructure, as miners look to reduce exposure to grid electricity prices and secure energy for future AI and HPC workloads.<\/p>\n

The company is headquartered in Singapore and operates data centers in the US, Norway, Bhutan, and Ethiopia. In April, DCD<\/i> reported<\/a> that Bitdeer had appointed a contractor to begin converting one of its Norwegian crypto mining sites for HPC workloads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
