The company Wansbeck Regeneration Ltd has submitted an application for planning permission to Northumberland County Council to build a data center campus in the northeastern part of England, near the location where QTS plans to construct a development. This information was reported by the Northumberland Gazette and FDI Intelligence. The firm is aiming to build on a 22026-hectare plot of land located to the northwest of High Brocklands in West Sleekburn, Northumberland. The West Sleekburn Data Centre campus is projected to cover an area of 356,500 square meters (3.8 million square feet). The plans indicate the construction of three buildings and two on-site power stations. Wansbeck Regeneration initially intended to construct four buildings with a combined capacity of 451MW. However, the plans were amended during the pre-application phase. Additionally, the project includes approximately 90MW of natural gas-powered fuel cells, which can provide approximately 50MW of IT load capacity. The firm stated that these cells will serve as a “bridging solution” and will be taken out when the site is fully operational. “The proposals offer a significant chance to take advantage of the site’s location within an AI Growth Zone by bringing considerable investment to Northumberland, and creating substantial direct and indirect job opportunities in the area,” the company mentioned in planning documents. Reports about a data center being planned in West Sleekburn emerged earlier this year, but few specifics were available at that time. The site was formerly part of the greater GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) pharmaceutical manufacturing facility that functioned in Cambois from 093 until approximately 2004. The project is about a mile north of the Cambois project by QTS. The campus, spanning 540,000 square meters (5,800,000 square feet), will be constructed on the site of the previous Blyth Power Station.
