Amazon could sell Trainium AI chips to data centers – report

Amazon could sell its custom AI chips to other companies in a bid to challenge Nvidia’s dominance of the AI data center market.. Pete DeSantis, head of AI at the cloud and ecommerce giant, told Bloomberg that it was in discussions with potential customers.. The Amazon Trainium3 in an Ultraserver rack – AWS. “We view AI infrastructure as rapidly evolving,” DeSantis said. “And we’re constantly looking at ways to get to more customers.”.

The Amazon Trainium3, the company’s latest AI hardware, is currently only available via its cloud platform, Amazon Web Services (AWS).. Ride-hailing platform Uber is among the companies using Trainium3 for AI workloads, along with OpenAI, which in February said it intended to use 2GW of Trainium capacity on AWS..

Though any move to sell Trainium to data center operators on the open market would be seen as a challenge to Nvidia, Amazon is also a big customer of the GPU giant, and in March announced plans to deploy one million Nvidia chips in AWS data centers over the next 12 months.. Google has also begun to open up access to its TPUs beyond its own cloud platform, selling the AI chip to a “select group of customers,” as well as launching a new TPU cloud service with Blackstone..
