OpenAI is planning another large-scale data center in the US.. The AI lab has revealed it is set to build a data center in Effingham County, Georgia, for which it is contracting 3.2GW of power from the Georgia Power Company.. – OpenAI/Stargate. Dubbed Project Camelia, the data center will be located within the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub, a 2,600+ acre area zoned for industrial use cases.
Details about the expected number of buildings and size of the data centers have not been provided.. Reporting from Bloomberg suggests OpenAI could spend more than $30 billion on the project.. OpenAI has said that the site will also use a closed-loop water system for cooling, and will not divert water from local communities..
Georgia Power will deliver the energy between 2028 and 2032. OpenAI has said that it will pay the full cost of infrastructure and electric services related to the data center and will reduce its power consumption with up to 1GW of “flexible demand response” during periods of high demand..
“We appreciate the leadership and thoughtfulness of the OpenAI team as they prepare to bring significant investment and cutting-edge technology to Georgia,” said Aaron Mitchell, senior vice president of strategic growth for Georgia Power. “At Georgia Power, we are working every day to help ensure that growth from data centers and other large-energy users brings value for our customers through higher reliability and lower prices.
Companies like OpenAI are making real commitments when it comes to responsible operation and development and demonstrating the benefits that these facilities can bring to Georgia communities. We’re excited to work with OpenAI, Effingham County and local partners on this significant project.”.
OpenAI has also said it will provide $80 million for a community fund, and up to $71 million in Codex – OpenAI’s agentic coding tool – credits available to Georgia college, community college, and technical school students.. Effingham County is located in southeastern Georgia, near Savannah.
The county is not currently home to any data centers, as per DataCenterMap, with most of the state’s data centers focused in Atlanta and Augusta.. OpenAI has several data center projects across the US, many with partners such as Oracle, Crusoe, and Related Digital. The flagship Stargate site is already operating in Abilene, Texas, with others under development in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Texas..
