Pantheon Atlas, the company behind an up to 1GW data center development in Topusko, Croatia, has received approval from the country’s transmission system operator, HOPS, to construct the transmission and distribution infrastructure required to power the data center.. – Getty Images. HOPS approved plans to construct more than €500 million ($569m) in infrastructure, including 280km (173 miles) of new transmission lines, fiber-optic lines, a 400kV substation in Topusko, and new roads around the location.
As part of the agreement, Pantheon will transfer ownership of the infrastructure to the Croatian government.. According to the companies, the approval confirmed the technical and regulatory feasibility of supplying electricity to the project at scale. Construction of the project is expected to commence in early 2027..
“Croatia’s largest-ever private investment is moving forward as a direct result of momentum from the unique partnership driving this project: Croatian expertise, US capital, world-class partners in Končar and Greenvolt, and continued support from the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Croatia and HEP (state-owned utility company),” said Mario Gudelj, Pantheon AI Project Director.. In addition to supplying the data center, the transmission infrastructure buildout is also expected to open grid access for more than 5GW of renewable energy capacity, which is currently bottlenecked in the country..
US investment group Pantheon Atlas announced plans for the up to €12 billion ($14.1bn) hyperscale AI data center and innovation campus in Topusko, in May.. The 310-acre campus is set to be located in open land 90km (56 miles) south of Zagreb and will have the potential for expansion to 450 acres..
The company claims an up to 1GW total capacity and 800MW usable IT load built to Nvidia Gigawatt Scale AI Factory standards. Pantheon Atlas said that the project will be fully powered by renewable energy from an on-site 500MW solar plant and 8,000MWh battery storage.. More in Europe.
