Microsoft plans to more than triple its global data center capacity to more than 38 gigawatts by 2032 from about 12 gigawatts now, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.. The planned expansion would give Microsoft a computing footprint larger than the peak electricity consumption of New York state..
The build-out covers both company-owned and leased facilities, but excludes computing power rented from neocloud providers such as CoreWeave, according to people familiar with the plans cited by Bloomberg.. Those sources said the roadmap could still change because data centers take years to build, and shifts in customer demand or new technology could alter current assumptions..
Microsoft is expanding capacity to meet strong demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing services, after demand became strong enough that the company had to turn away some business.. Microsoft reported capital expenditures of $145 billion in its latest fiscal year, and analysts expect spending to keep rising.
The company also disclosed more than $130 billion in new data center leases in a recent quarter.. Microsoft and Meta Platforms have each committed tens of billions of dollars in additional data center leases in recent quarters, pushing total industry commitments for future data center capacity above $850 billion, according to a Bloomberg analysis of regulatory filings..
Europe is also drawing more data center investment. Google said on Wednesday it would spend at least 13 billion euros, about $14.5 billion, on AI infrastructure in Finland, while Microsoft and TikTok have together committed more than $30 billion in the country.. Featured image credit.
