Google Home is adding support for the Model Context Protocol, with an early access build for Premium Advanced subscribers due in the coming weeks.. The integration will let AI agents use Google Home to carry out smart home tasks by connecting to external APIs through MCP, a software standard for agent-based chatbot interactions..
Supported agents include Google Antigravity, Claude, Hermes and Open Claw. Google said the integration will let those agents “securely work with all of the devices and event history in your Google Home ecosystem.”. Google said suggested uses include using natural language to monitor activity, review camera summaries across rooms, control connected devices and build custom smart home dashboards..
The early access release will initially be limited to Google Home Premium Advanced users. The subscription costs $20 a month or $200 a year. Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024, and the standard has gained wider adoption over the past year.
Google, OpenAI, Microsoft and SpaceXAI support MCP in some form, and a range of applications already integrate with it.. Experts have raised security concerns about MCP, including insufficient authentication mechanisms. Those concerns have been reflected in multiple data breaches tied to adoption of the standard..
