Google has started giving engineers across the company access to Anthropic’s Claude for coding through its internal development tool, marking a change from its earlier restrictions on outside AI coding products.. Engineers can use Anthropic’s Opus 5 model for internal work inside Antigravity, Google’s internal version of its development platform, according to two employees and confirmed by a Google spokesperson..
Google had typically barred most employees from using external coding tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex, while directing them to build with Gemini instead.. Some exceptions already existed. Teams within Google DeepMind had access to Claude for some time, and some employees obtained access for high-priority engineering projects, according to three people with knowledge of the matter..
“Engineers have access to select third-party models in Antigravity, which is aligned with our external Antigravity enterprise offering,” a Google spokesperson said.. “Gemini remains our primary and foundational model for internal development, with third-party models available on a quota to support specialized use cases,” the spokesperson said..
The spokesperson said Claude was being offered to employees under per-user quotas and was intended to supplement Gemini.. Google is also an investor in Anthropic and said earlier this year that it planned to invest up to $40 billion in the company.. Some engineers had grown frustrated with Gemini’s limits on coding tasks, even after recent gains from its Flash 3.8 model, as Anthropic and OpenAI continued to perform better in coding use cases..
Amazon also began allowing employees to use Claude and Codex earlier this year after staff complaints.. Featured image credit. Tags: claudeGoogle
