Apple introduced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, priced at $1,999 and set to go on sale on October 23.. Preorders for the device begin on October 16, and the iPhone Duo is the first major device launch under Apple CEO John Ternus.. The iPhone Duo uses a wider foldable design rather than a tall, narrow format.
Apple said the approach improves the aspect ratio for video when the device is unfolded.. The inner screen measures 7.6 inches and the outer display measures 5.4 inches. Apple said the device was inspired by the iPad’s versatility and can also be used unfolded in a vertical mode..
The inner display includes an under-display camera. Apple said it applied a custom nanotexture finish to reduce glare and make the screen crease less visible.. Apple said the hinge uses grade 5 aluminum and more than 100 components designed for durability and smooth opening and closing..
The device uses Touch ID and does not include Face ID. Users can also unlock it with an Apple Watch.. The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip and C2 modem, which Apple said allows faster uploads.
Like last year’s iPhone Air, the model is eSIM-only.. Apple said the battery can deliver 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display.. The phone has a dual-camera system with a 48-megapixel fusion main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera with 2x optical zoom.
It does not include a telephoto lens.. Users can take selfies with the rear cameras while previewing the shot on the outer display. The outer screen can also play an animation intended to help keep children focused during photos..
A smart-take feature uses an on-device model to capture an image when all subjects in the frame are posing. Apple also adapted iOS 27 for the foldable format, moving controls such as Wi-Fi to the side and arranging the home screen vertically.. Users can run apps in split screen, pair apps, pin a video to the top half while using other apps below, and use the phone half-folded or resting on a table.
Apple said Apple Pencil support will arrive later this year.. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage and comes in two colors.
