The information you need to be aware of. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) and Tufts Medicine have formed a partnership to enhance various aspects of healthcare. This alliance will focus on automating prior authorization processes, developing value-based care models, and integrating clinical networks.
Tufts Medicine will utilize Humata Health to automate and streamline prior authorization for BCBSMA members, beginning with outpatient diagnostic imaging and eventually expanding to other services. This will replace lengthy administrative delays by transmitting structured clinical data and receiving responses in minutes.
The primary goal of this agreement is to eliminate manual prior authorization delays for high-volume outpatient services. Medicine at Tufts is introducing an AI-based system from Humata Health, now owned by R1, to expedite and automate the process of prior authorization for Blue Cross subscribers.
The platform is designed to streamline the approval process. The launch will primarily concentrate on outpatient diagnostic imaging, particularly MRI, with the intention to quickly expand into other clinical areas and high-demand procedures. The platform aims to reduce turnaround times from several business days to mere minutes by automatically matching clinical documentation against Blue Cross medical necessity guidelines at the time of order placement, thus eliminating the need for laborious fax exchanges and manual clinical assessments.
This integration is supported by the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC) and its New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), ensuring regional interoperability via FHIR. By implementing HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards on NEHEN rails, Tufts Medicine and Blue Cross are creating two-way data sharing channels to facilitate the transfer of clinical data, referrals, and real-time claims adjudication.
This initiative is a part of the Tufts Medicine Alliance Network (HMO) aimed at improving accessibility. Alongside administrative automation, organizations are implementing a novel commercial service approach. They are initially evaluating it with Blue Cross’s corporate staff and then plans to extend it to the larger commercial business sector.
The Tufts Medicine Alliance Network (HMO), recently established, revolves around Tufts Medicine’s comprehensive delivery system, consisting of Tufts Medical Center, Lowell General Hospital, MelroseWakefield Hospital, and Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford, coupled with leading pediatric and oncology locations, namely Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This network ensures access through assured service level agreements (SLAs).
In response to significant outpatient appointment delays in Eastern Massachusetts, the HMO program ensures that enrolled members can obtain a primary care appointment within one day and receive an appointment with a Tufts Medicine specialist within 21 days.
