Mystery tech firm looks to build ~800-acre data center campus outside Grand Rapids, Michigan

A large-scale data center campus is being planned outside Grand Rapids, Michigan.. As reported by local press, an unnamed technology firm is looking to develop on land in Solon Township, located in Kent County, just outside Cedar Springs and some 20 miles north of Grand Rapids.. – Google Maps.

According to county emails published via a freedom of information request, an unnamed technology company aims to develop on around 800 acres near US-131 and 17 Mile Road.. The project could see more than $1 billion invested to develop 600,000-800,000 sq ft. Further expansion could be possible..

Details of the proposed end user were not shared, but the emails note it is not Microsoft. The development is known as Project Peninsula in emails, and an NDA has been signed between the township and Venerly LLC.. News that a developer could be targeting Solon Township surfaced back in January..

The negotiations have largely been taking place through The Right Place, an economic development organization focused on the Grand Rapids area. Talks have been ongoing since last year.. The township met this week to discuss the introduction of new data center zoning ordinances to add definitions for data centers and outline general regulations and standards.

However, the planning commission tabled the ordinances and will discuss them again in July.. The township introduced a six-month moratorium on accepting any data center proposals in February.. Thank you for your North American news subscription.
