University of Hamburg plans computer center renovation

The University of Hamburg’s (UHH) Regional Computing Center in northern Germany is undergoing repairs due to significant structural damage and pollution contamination. The building, located on Rothenbaumchaussee and Schlüterstraße in Hamburg, has not disclosed the cause of the damage or renovation costs.

Despite the issues, the center continues to operate with its essential technical infrastructure intact, according to a UHH spokesperson. “The UHH is presently collaborating with the concerned authorities to organize financing and timing for the next phase of the project.” The University recognizes the unique cultural and historical importance of the building and remains committed to its long-term preservation and utilization. To the best of its ability, it is implementing the required steps for planning, stabilization, and renovation.

A 1960s-era listed building, the Structural damage to the Regional Computing Center was found during a regular inspection. The necessary repairs involve taking out and putting back concrete on the building’s load-supporting outer surface, as reported by DataCenter Insider. A steel structure is utilized to maintain the building’s stability during the renovation process.

The Regional Computing Center houses multiple powerful computational systems. “Hummel-2” is a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster that is designed to facilitate intricate astrophysical, chemistry, and computer science simulations. This HPC cluster, which is water-cooled, comprises 32 general-purpose GPU cores and 178 compute nodes, as stated by UHH.

It also has an overall storage capacity of 5.2 petabytes.
