Vodafone Greece and PPC Group propose Greek fiber JV

Vodafone Greece and Public Power Corporation S.A have entered into an agreement to form a fiber joint venture in Greece.. The JV, which will be split 50:50, will combine both companies respective Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks and wholesale fiber businesses in the country.. – Getty Images.

This JV will cover more than 1.6 million homes when combining Vodafone and PPC Group’s current footprint.. PPC’s 100 percent fiber optic network FiberGrid has now reached 1.88 million households (homes passed), of which more than 1.1 million are already available for immediate connection (ready for service)..

Meanwhile, Vodafone’s FTTH network coverage exceeds 550,000 homes and businesses.. PPC is a utility group provider in southeastern Europe, primarily operating in Greece, Romania, and North Macedonia. The company is the largest electricity supplier in Greece and one of the largest in Romania, servicing 8.5 million customers and supplying approximately 32TWh of electricity..

According to Vodafone, the JV intends to provide wholesale open access to Internet service providers in Greece.. “The creation of a joint venture with PPC is a strategic investment that will substantially accelerate the development of our fiber optic network and significantly enhance our ability to offer a top connectivity experience to even more homes and businesses,” said Achilleas Kanaris, CEO of Vodafone Greece.. “Vodafone Group’s investment demonstrates in practice the strategic importance it attaches to the Greek market and its ongoing commitment to its development.

We will continue to expand our footprint in the country, contributing to the transition from copper to fiber and to the achievement of national digital coverage goals.”. The formation of the JV is subject to regulatory approvals, with no guarantee that a deal will be agreed. Vodafone noted that it will provide a further update in due course..
