French renewable energy company Voltalia has signed a 322MW transmission system use agreement with Brazil’s national grid operator, ONS, to supply data center projects in the country.. – Getty Images. The company secured the capacity at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex in the state of Ceará, in northeastern Brazil. Voltalia has said that it is in advanced discussions with several data center firms concerning the secured capacity. It also plans to develop dedicated wind power projects at the site to supply decarbonized electricity to prospective customers.. Pecém is an industrial and port complex on Brazil’s northeast coast. Voltalia said the site offers available land, existing infrastructure, and direct grid access suited to energy-intensive digital infrastructure projects. No data center customers or project timelines were named in the announcement.. “This agreement marks an important step in Voltalia’s strategy in Brazil, strengthening its ability to seize emerging opportunities linked to the rapid growth of the digital economy, particularly in the data center sector,” said chief executive Robert Klein.. Voltalia operates wind, solar, hydro, and biomass projects in more than 20 countries. Brazil is one of its core markets. The company has an installed and under-construction capacity of 3.55GW, with 2.9GW operational.. Ceará is fast becoming a data center hub in the Brazilian market. The state currently hosts 26 operational data centers across 13 providers, with its capital, Fortaleza, housing 13 facilities.
