Ditching Post-It Notes in the OR: LiveData Showcases Real-Time Dashboards at #MUSEInspire

At the yearly MUSE conference – known as #MUSEInspire – a MEDITECH user-group event run by actual end-users of the company’s EHR system, I was able to attend a presentation given by LiveData. I left the session with a fresh appreciation for how a well-run, transparent Operating Room (OR) can benefit patients, clinicians, and the healthcare organization as a whole.

The presenters were Jeffrey Oliver, MSN, RN, CCNS, CNOR – Clinical Support Specialist, and David Owen, Chief Product Officer at LiveData.

Key Takeaways Goodbye, Post-Its: Real-time dashboards remove the OR “black box” by replacing outdated manual communication methods. Visibility Drives Value: Transparent OR tracking enhances hospital operational efficiency and improves the patient and family experience.

Actionable Analytics: AI capabilities and seamless MEDITECH integration transform raw OR data into smarter, data-driven decisions. Creative engagements kept the audience engaged. From the outset, it was evident that this would be no ordinary lecture-style presentation.

Participants entered a space covered in yellow sticky notes. Each note featured a handwritten message styled like the notes that surgeons and OR nurses often leave for one another before, during, and after a procedure. [embedded content] Oliver and Owen also used the hotel’s internal phone system in a distinctive way to demonstrate how OR staff can be interrupted mid-procedure, and employed a stack of imaging CD cases to illustrate the multiple information sources that OR personnel must consult.

The takeaway? Without an electronic OR system, staff have no choice but to rely on manual methods such as Post-it notes, phone calls, and CDs to communicate and access the information they need. Fortunately, there is a better solution: LiveData delivers the OR visibility that is essential.
