For much of the last decade, the data center industry has been focused on one thing: building capacity. Securing power, finding the right locations, and bringing new data centers online as quickly as possible has been the priority for operators. Given the growth of cloud computing, hyperscale deployments, and now AI, that focus has been entirely justified.

The industry has done an incredible job of responding to demand.. But as more capacity comes online and AI workloads continue to evolve, I believe the conversation needs to evolve. The next challenge isn’t simply building data centers.

It’s the credibility behind operating them.. The real work continues after handover. It’s easy to celebrate a new facility when construction is complete.

Ribbon cuttings, customer announcements, and commissioning milestones are important moments. But long-term success is built on operational excellence, protecting performance, assuring service, and delivering reliability.. A data center might take two years to design and build, but it could operate for the next twenty or thirty years.

As an industry, we spend a lot of time talking about megawatts under development. Increasingly, we should be talking about how that capacity and service will be managed once they are commissioned.. Operations is becoming a strategic discipline.

Historically, operations have sometimes been viewed as something that starts after handover. In my experience, the best outcomes happen when operational thinking is embedded from the very beginning.. Operational teams should have a voice during design, construction, and commissioning.

They understand how facilities will actually be maintained, how risks can be reduced, and how systems can be optimized over the long term.. The most effective operators aren’t simply maintaining infrastructure. They are constantly looking for ways to improve performance, reduce risk, and create better outcomes for customers.

That’s becoming increasingly important as facilities become more complex, especially with the introduction of new technologies such as DLC.. Why AI changes the conversation. Today’s facilities are very different from the data centers many of us built even a few years ago.

The arrival of AI is accelerating this shift. Higher power densities, liquid cooling systems, and rapidly evolving hardware are creating operational environments that require new skills and new ways of thinking.. At the same time, customers are becoming more sophisticated in what they expect from their infrastructure partners..

They are not simply looking for available capacity. They want confidence that the facility has been designed and will be operated around the specific needs of their technology. They also want a partner who understands the operational realities of supporting high-performance workloads throughout the life of the deployment..

That means operators need to work more closely with customers than ever before.. Understanding how technology will be deployed and used allows facilities to be designed, maintained, and continually improved to meet evolving operational requirements.. The physical asset remains important, but operational capability is increasingly becoming a key differentiator..
