The Hidden Affordability Gap: How Confusing Bills Stop Patients From Paying

The subsequent passage is a guest composition by Casey Williams, SVP of Patient Engagement at RevSpring. Discussions about the affordability of healthcare often revolve around the costs of treatments, the coverage provided by insurers, and the amounts that patients are responsible for paying.

The significance of communication is acknowledged, however, an important aspect that healthcare providers can currently address is the importance of the financial experience, not just the total cost of the bill. A patient’s likelihood of payment, return visits, and trust in their provider is increased when they receive a clear, timely, and personalized bill with genuine payment options.

This suggests catering to the patient’s financial situation: connecting with them via their preferred method of communication, such as text, portal, or mail, and providing a payment plan that aligns with their budget. When patients are unable to access those alternatives, uncertainty leads to inactivity.

A person encountering an ambiguous message three months after being discharged experiences an entirely distinct range of challenges. The price comes as a shock, the procedure may seem hostile, and the connection with the supplier suffers. Especially for rural and crucial healthcare facilities, the consequences are more severe.

These entities function in a scenario where the difference between running and shutting down is extremely small, allowing minimal scope for unrecovered earnings.
