The report highlights problems in various crucial sectors, leading to potential performance decline and increased downtime. The most severe shortages are observed in facilities and physical infrastructure, power and cooling systems, and IT operations.
The main cause behind these shortages is the difficulty in recruitment due to a lack of skilled professionals, as nearly half of the survey participants pointed out that the lack of technical expertise in potential candidates is the primary obstacle. Participants mentioned that there is a lack of awareness within the industry as a problem.
The survey investigated the methods organizations use for recruitment and the locations they draw new talent from. Firms are increasingly seeking employees from nearby technical infrastructure and utilities sectors, while cross-hiring from telecoms has dropped to third place. The demand for workforce growth is being driven by fluid dynamics and power knowledge, with respondents seeking candidates from power and water utilities and the oil and gas sector.
Additionally, companies are exploring various educational routes, such as internships, apprenticeships, and university programs. A common issue across these aspects is the lack of organization in recruitment and training processes within the industry. The absence of consistent and deliberate systems for building and sustaining talent leads to staffing gaps, poor onboarding, inconsistent training, and slow upskilling, according to the report.
It states that organizations with workforce development as their core infrastructure will be best positioned to succeed during the industry’s rapid growth. In order to achieve success, it is essential to invest in well-organized training sessions and uniform onboarding processes.
Additionally, it is crucial to provide staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively utilize AI and other emerging technologies within the industry. In the absence of a transformation in this area, the disparities in expertise and hiring shortages will persist, and there is a possibility that they will increase in the forthcoming years due to the rapid acceleration of technological advancements.”.
