Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says AI safety needs engineering, not laws

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said new AI laws are unnecessary and argued that safety should be handled through engineering and existing legal frameworks.. Speaking at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference on Tuesday, Huang said AI is “hardware and software” built by humans, not an “alien mind,” and can therefore be controlled by humans..

“Safety is an engineering problem, not a legal one,” Huang said. “We’re developing software after all. We’re developing computing systems after all.

It’s a complicated computing system, but it’s ultimately a computing system.”. Huang said market forces should be enough to stop companies from releasing unsafe AI products. He said companies should not release products if they are not confident in their functionality, capability or safety..

“We don’t need any new laws. We don’t need new regulations,” Huang said. He added that companies should move quickly on innovation but pause if they believe a product is not safe..

Huang also linked AI to Nvidia’s growth ambitions. “I’m more ambitious than ever,” he said. “The sky’s the limit for us.

The sky’s the limit for our company. The sky’s the limit for every industry, for every single country.”. The remarks come as AI companies face scrutiny over safety and product failures.

The source material cited the 2024 CrowdStrike software outage that disrupted thousands of flights and Meta’s $18 billion settlement over lawsuits tied to alleged social media harms to children.. The source material also cited cases in which AI systems were accused of causing harm, including an OpenAI model hacking into Hugging Face and lawsuits over suicides involving people who had long conversations with a chatbot..

Huang did not discuss possible formal self-regulation by the industry. The source material said he has instead backed open-weight models and their use as a counterweight to proprietary AI labs.. Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella made a similar argument at the All-In Summit on Monday, saying safety concerns should apply globally, including in China.

“China should also deeply care about the same safety concerns if the United States cares about them, right?” Nadella said.. Featured image credit. Tags: FeaturedJensen HuangNvidia
