Bluesky has applied to make “.bsky” an internet domain suffix, comparable to .com or .org, CEO Toni Schneider said on Monday.. The application has not been approved. If approved, users could replace longer handles such as @sarahp.bsky.social with shorter domain names such as sarahp.bsky..
Schneider said the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, would publish applications for new domains on October 7, 2026, including Bluesky’s request. The nonprofit oversees internet domain names. The process is expected to take 18 to 24 months..
Bluesky said it had not finalized how .bsky domains would be requested, registered or distributed, but had no plans to sell or monetize them.. The company said selling domains would conflict with its belief in an open web. Bluesky has raised significant funding but is not generating advertising revenue..
The domains could allow Bluesky to expand user profiles beyond pages containing biographies and posts into more comprehensive personal home pages representing users’ online presence.. “Domains are a big part of the open web, as they allow users to control their own online identity,” Bluesky Chief Operating Officer Rose Wang said in a comment shared with TechCrunch..
“Bluesky was built on the belief that you should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away,” Wang said.. Featured image credit. Tags: bluesky
