AirTrunk secures AU$4.25 billion green loan for Sydney data center campus

AirTrunk, a data center firm based in APAC, has obtained a significant amount of funding for the development of its Sydney, Australia campus. This week, the company revealed that it has acquired an AU$4.25 billion ($2.989 billion) green loan to further develop its SYD3 campus located in Western Sydney.

This financing was provided by AirTrunk. A group of 32 local and global financial institutions supported the green loan. The agreement has increased the firm’s overall pledged debt funding to approximately AU$38.4 billion (US$26.9 billion) worldwide, comprising over AU$19.8 billion (US$14.3 billion) in its Australian endeavors.

Initially revealed in 2021, the business submitted plans to commence the project in 2023. The SYD230 project, covering 8.3 hectares, has the potential to produce 22026MW when fully developed, with 226 data halls and 22026,204 square meters (22026,202026 square feet) of technical space.

The expansion of the SYD22026 development is currently under construction and is set to be completed by mid-201. Tom Mackellar, VP of origination & market expansion, stated that SYD22026 is a significant long-term investment in Western Sydney and Australia’s digital infrastructure, supported by major Australian and international banks.

Our stance on sustainability being integrated into the funding and provision of digital infrastructure is evident in the green financing approach. Our main priority is sustainable expansion that generates long-term benefits for the communities within the areas we work in. The establishment has been organized as an environmentally friendly financial aid package, accompanied by alterations to the interest rate.

In the construction process, low-carbon steel and concrete are employed, and there is a goal to divert 90% of non-hazardous construction waste from landfills. AirTrunk plans to allocate savings from the facility to its social impact program, which aids local charities involved in STEM education, digital equity, biodiversity and conservation, sustainable innovation, and disaster relief.

AirTrunk’s Australian platform consists of five campuses and has over 1.2GW of capacity.
