Google, BlackRock, Ford Motors, and Carhartt have announced a collective skilled workforce training initiative called the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades, which aims to help meet the growing demand for skilled trades workers across the US.. Rather than forming a new funding pool, the four founding members will build upon their already announced independent commitments to skilled workforce training schemes across 30 US states.
The new alliance will focus on three key areas: strengthening pipelines for skilled trades, scaling proven effective training approaches, and inviting a wide range of partners to collaborate to broaden its reach nationwide.. The founders said the initiative was important for training the next generation of America’s skilled workers and for filling anticipated gaps, with Google and BlackRock reiterating estimates that 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled by 2030..
Jim Farley, president and CEO of Ford, said: “We recognize the skilled trades workforce shortage is a national crisis but also a generational opportunity.”. The founding members have stressed the importance of skilled trades in underpinning essential American industries including energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing, with Google highlighting examples of welders and pipefitters fitting complex cooling infrastructure for data centers and fiber technicians and electricians crucial to powering advanced network grids..

The Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades has three main aims.
Its first aim is to strengthen pipelines for skilled trades by providing clear, accessible pathways into jobs via training initiatives along with increased exposure to and awareness of opportunities.. The second aim is to scale evidence-based successful training approaches through a co-funded Skilled Trades Report in partnership with Burning Glass Institute and Jobs for the Future, which will measure gaps, track progress, and share best training practices..
Finally, the Alliance aims to broaden its reach nationally by involving a wide range of partners, from trade associations to labor unions to educational, nonprofit, public, and private organizations.. Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, said on LinkedIn: “The founding members of this Alliance have driven meaningful impact independently, and now, we are uniting to expand apprenticeships, modernize training, and scale these pathways at a national level.”.
Google, Carhartt, BlackRock, and Ford Motors have already committed to independent initiatives which, alongside the Alliance, they will continue to build upon.. Google has committed to training more than 300,000 Americans in skilled trades across more than 20 US states, backed by $50 million from Google.org, supporting four trade and contractor associations and 14 labor unions.
This includes Google’s Electrical Training Alliance, which trains tens of thousands of workers, and $10m of funding from Google.org supporting the Manufacturing Institute in training tens of thousands of workers in AI skills.. Thank you for your North American news subscription.
