Oracle issues RFP for 2GW of new renewable capacity in New Mexico

Oracle has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop 2GW of new renewable energy capacity in New Mexico.. – Oracle. According to the cloud computing and database giant, the RFP will solicit projects that use solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy technologies, prioritizing projects that can deliver energy on an accelerated timeline..

The RFP will be open to energy developers with projects located in New Mexico, with proposals evaluated based on capacity and growth potential, expected delivery timing, project maturity, technical viability, and ability to support Oracle’s long-term energy commitments.. “New Mexico has an extraordinary opportunity to grow its renewable energy resources and create lasting value for communities across the state, and Oracle wants to help accelerate that growth,” said Mahesh Thiagarajan, executive vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

“This RFP is focused on identifying projects that can deliver brand new renewable energy generation in New Mexico and support Project Jupiter’s commitment to achieve 100 percent carbon-free energy matching by 2031.”. The RFP seeks to support power delivery at the company’s underdevelopment 2.5GW Project Jupiter campus.

Oracle was announced as the tenant of Project Jupiter in January. The 1,400-acre campus is expected to span four data center buildings and is being built by Stack and BorderPlex Digital Assets, with the companies previously announcing plans to invest up to $165 billion in the project..

To power the facility, the company signed a deal with solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) developer Bloom last year for 1.8GW of power, expanding it to 2.8GW of capacity in April. Also in April, it was revealed that Bloom would deploy the cells at the Project Jupiter site to replace gas turbine units and diesel generators previously planned for the site..

The company has faced several roadblocks in the campus’s development, the biggest being the rejection of a natural gas pipeline extension to feed the campus by state officials in July. Despite the setback, Oracle claims that the project still remains on schedule. The company had requested federal regulators to fast-track the review to allow the pipeline to enter service by August 15, warning that missing the window would lead to much higher costs being incurred.

An initial application had been denied in March.. Carbon capture investment. Alongside the RFP, Oracle also announced an up to $1 million funding package to support research into the potential deployment of carbon capture and sequestration at the Project Jupiter campus and across New Mexico..

According to Oracle, the investment will support research into how CO2 associated with Bloom Energy fuel cells could be captured safely and efficiently, create a pathway for permanent storage, and develop a viable commercial model for transportation and potential industrial use.. “Oracle is focused on powering Project Jupiter responsibly and reducing its emissions over time,” said Mahesh Thiagarajan, executive vice president, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

“CCS is one of the ways that we can address the emissions from fuel cells, and we need that expertise to help chart a course. Our goal is to achieve 100 percent carbon-free energy matching for Project Jupiter by 2031 and meet New Mexico’s Energy Transition Act goals before 2045.

This research will help us rigorously evaluate how CCS could help reduce emissions and further advance our water positivity goals.”. The grant is expected to support research conducted by academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and other research partners with expertise in carbon capture, energy systems, geology, environmental policy, economics, or related fields..

The primary focus of the research will be on environmental, regulatory, and economic considerations associated with CCS, including the feasibility of carbon capture at the Project Jupiter site and the potential for permanent geologic storage in New Mexico.. The grant represents Oracle’s first publicized investment in CCS systems.

Several other major tech companies have thrown their weight behind the technology. Most recently, Microsoft signed a 650,000 ton carbon removal deal with Danish bioenergy CCS firm BioCirc over a seven-year period.. More in North America.
