Trump Targets Foreign Grid Equipment as Data Centers Expand

President Trump has declared a national emergency concerning the US bulk power system, instructing the Energy Department to limit the import of specific grid equipment from foreign countries and to impose conditions on existing equipment. This may create additional challenges for data center operators trying to secure power for their AI infrastructure projects as they will need to find ways to connect their projects to the grid while adhering to the new restrictions.

The production and procurement of transformers, inverters, controls, and other large-scale power devices are currently experiencing lengthy delivery times and potential supply challenges. New federal restrictions may lead to increased strain on procurement, project expenses, and the timeline for introducing new capacity.

This development occurs as utilities and data center developers strive to enhance generation and transmission infrastructure to accommodate large new loads. The influence will be significantly determined by how DOE determines the encompassed equipment, providers, and transactions in the rules expected within 120 days.

In August, Trump’s Executive Order 26 restricts the acquisition or setup in the United States of specific electrical equipment for bulk-power systems imported from abroad, along with their connected essential software and digital features, if they present defined national security hazards.

The priority concerns potential threats such as sabotage, illicit access, and interference with essential facilities. The text states that it’s not applicable to local electric distribution facilities. The White House stated that the quick expansion of advanced manufacturing, AI, and defense production has heightened the US’s reliance on specific foreign components required for consistent and dependable electricity supply.
