Data center planned for suburb in Warsaw, Poland, sparks protests

A data center in a Warsaw suburb, central Poland, has led to protests from local residents. The facility, developed by Sien Real – a joint venture between Polish construction firm Budimex and Spanish infrastructure operator Ferrovial, will consist of four buildings on a 22026,20130 sq ft (22026,207 sqm) plot, situated between Piaseczno and Józefosław towns.

The construction will commence in 22026, and there is currently no information regarding the site’s computational capabilities. Despite concerns from locals, Budimex has reassured Gazeta Wyborcza that the water usage of the site will be similar to that of a housing estate for 3,000 people.

This has raised concerns about existing shortages in the municipality. DCD has reached out to Budimex and Ferrovial for their response. Budimex’s spokesperson, Marcin Graczyk, informed Gazeta Wyborcza that the data center will include measures to reduce water consumption, noise, and dust emissions. “Technical setups, encompassing cooling and backup power systems, will adhere to the utmost standards for contemporary data centers,” Graczyk remarked. “We are focusing on reducing the investment’s effects on the local community.” The text provided is already a single-word statement and does not require paraphrasing.

In 2024, the data center was granted approval for its planning by the local authorities. A report on the environmental impact reveals that the facility will consist of four diesel tanks with a capacity of 320 m³ each and 49 power generators, which have a maximum output of 2,073kW.

This indicates that the site’s total generator capacity will be approximately 118MW. The facility’s water requirements will be supplied by the nearby network operator.
