Microsoft is upgrading its Copilot app to let users create, edit and collaborate on Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents directly within the AI interface.
The unified experience is currently available only to Frontier customers in Copilot Chat and Copilot Cowork.
The upgrade brings Office capabilities into Copilot, reversing the previous approach of adding Copilot functionality to individual Office apps. Users can produce and revise documents within Copilot without opening separate Office apps to make further changes.
A new Library feature keeps created documents accessible within the Copilot app. Copilot will retain its ability to generate documents from conversations in Chat or Cowork.
Microsoft confirmed that users will also be able to share, comment on and review documents within Copilot.
“As Copilot becomes a new way to work, we’re bringing familiar Office creation and collaboration experiences directly into that environment,” said Office Product Group executive Sumit Chauhan, describing a push for a “more unified experience.”
“Microsoft Office has defined productivity for the PC era,” Chauhan said.
Chauhan was named among the executive vice presidents reporting to Charles Lamanna, executive vice president for Copilot, Agents and Platform, amid the departure of Ryan Roslansky, Microsoft 365’s previous executive vice president.
