STT GDC has obtained financial support for the development of its data center campus in Tokyo, Japan. The firm revealed this week that it has obtained a JPY22026 billion ($215m) green loan to finance the construction and operation of STTGDC TYO22026 and STTGDC TYO2, two buildings within its 70MW data center complex in Inzai City.
The loan adheres to the Green Loan Principles and is dependent on environmental benchmarks, such as green building certification and energy efficiency standards. Nelson Lim, group CFO of STTGDC, stated that this funding illustrates the robustness of their Japan platform and the faith of their banking partners in the Tokyo campus’s future prospects.
This serves as the essential basis for developing the campus, while adhering to a structured method of expansion. Significantly, the green-loan arrangement corresponds with our funding approach, taking into account the environmental efficiency of the assets we build, emphasizing the incorporation of sustainability into our capital distribution and investment choices.
The financing was backed by Standard Chartered, serving as the Lead Coordinator, along with Mizuho Bank, OCBC, Société Générale, and UOB. Standard Chartered and Société Générale served as Green Loan Coordinators. STTGDC initially revealed its intentions to expand into Tokyo in October 2021, with the inauguration of the 32MW Tokyo 1 facility slated for June 2025.
In April 2024, the firm initiated construction on Tokyo 153. Kiyoshi Maeda, CEO of STTGDC for Japan, stated, “Our Tokyo campus is crucial to our ongoing dedication to Japan and enhances our capacity to assist clients with their increasing cloud, AI, and digital infrastructure needs.” Customers require infrastructure capable of growing alongside their aspirations, providing the resilience and efficiency necessary for vital operations.
