Google launched a website on Tuesday that lets anyone check whether an image, video or audio clip was generated using artificial intelligence.. The site uses SynthID, which Google introduced in 2023, to identify AI-generated media. Google previously offered the tool for testing to select journalists, media professionals and researchers at Google I/O last year..
Google has also integrated SynthID verification into the Gemini app and Google Chrome. The company said people currently make 1 million requests to verify content every day.. Google’s Nano Banana, Veo and Lyria models use SynthID to watermark generated media, as do its generation tools Gemini, Flow, ProducerAI and Vids..
OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao also support SynthID. OpenAI maintains its own site for checking content, while Apple is said to be adding SynthID support soon.. The new Google site supports JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, WEBP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF, TIF and GIF image formats..
Supported video formats are MP4, MOV and WEBM. Audio formats include WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AAC and M4A.. Microsoft and Meta use their own standards for watermarking and verifying content.
Watermarking and verification tools are not infallible and often fail to identify content created by their makers’ models.. Featured image credit. Tags: GooglesynthID
