OpenAI acquires camera startup Glass Imaging for $300 million

OpenAI has bought smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for more than $300 million, The Wall Street Journal reported. Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 and is based in Los Altos, California. The company had previously raised about $30 million from investors..

Glass Imaging was founded by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop. The two previously led the team that developed Apple’s Portrait Mode.. The company uses artificial intelligence to address the physical size constraints of smartphone cameras.

Its neural networks are designed to learn the characteristics of specific camera systems and improve image quality at the moment a photo is taken, rather than editing images afterward.. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the acquisition.. The ChatGPT maker has been rumored to be developing its own hardware, including smartphones, earbuds and AI companion devices..

In 2025, OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive said they had been working together on a device startup called io. OpenAI bought Ive’s company for $6.5 billion.. Featured image credit.
