Spotify can now exclude kids’ music from recommendations

Spotify has begun rolling out a mobile feature that lets users exclude kids’ and family music from their taste profiles, a change aimed at keeping children’s listening from affecting recommendations and Spotify Wrapped.. The feature is launching globally for both Free and Premium users and works through a new toggle that removes children’s music from a user’s taste profile when enabled..

Spotify said the setting will default to including kids’ music in the taste profile until users switch it off. Once disabled, tracks such as songs from animated movies, family television themes, nursery rhymes and other music made for children will no longer shape recommendations..

That exclusion also applies to Spotify products built from listening history, including Discover Weekly, Daily Mix and the year-end Wrapped summary.. Spotify said the change will apply retroactively. Previously played kids’ music will no longer count toward metrics such as a user’s top song or top artist in Wrapped..

The issue has been a recurring complaint from parents since Wrapped launched, as children often listen through devices connected to a parent’s account even when families have separate child accounts under a Spotify Family plan.. Shared household devices such as televisions and smart speakers are commonly linked to a parent’s account, and children also frequently control music in cars, which can distort the account owner’s listening profile..

Spotify had previously allowed users to exclude individual tracks or playlists from their taste profiles, but that process was manual. The company also recently introduced Managed Accounts for listeners under 13, with parental controls and age-appropriate music discovery.. Featured image credit.
