Volvo brings Gemini to refreshed XC40 and EX40

Volvo has refreshed the XC40 for the 2028 model year and will drop the all-electric EX40 from the U.S. lineup, while keeping it on sale in international markets.. The updated XC40 will be sold in the United States only in B5 trim, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 247 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a small electric motor..

Volvo said the 2028 XC40 will reach U.S. dealerships in early 2028, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.. The redesigned XC40 and EX40 receive a broader exterior update than the model’s prior 2022 refresh. Volvo revised the front bumper, headlights, hood and fenders, and also changed the rear design to match the new front end..

The EX40 gets the same exterior revisions and remains visually close to the gasoline XC40. The main difference is the grille, with the EX40 using a flat body-colored panel and the XC40 featuring diagonal grille slashes.. Inside, both models get a new 11.2-inch center display, up from 9 inches previously on the XC40.

The system runs the latest version of Android Automotive and includes Google’s Gemini integration for vehicle settings and infotainment functions.. Volvo also updated the cabin with revised ambient lighting. The automaker said Gemini had already been added to most of its models earlier this year..

The XC40 and EX40 also receive an upgraded sensing package with high-resolution cameras, ultrasonic sensors and updated radar. The changes add a detailed 3D vehicle view and an automated lane-change function within the Pilot Assist driver assistance system.. Volvo said the updated safety features are managed by a new central safety controller with greater processing power and over-the-air update capability.

The company did not detail what additional driver assistance functions could be added later.. The current-generation XC40 debuted in 2017, and the all-electric XC40 Recharge followed in 2019. Volvo renamed that model the EX40 in 2024 to match its EV naming structure used for models such as the EX30, EX60 and EX90..

The XC40 is Volvo’s third-best-selling model in the United States and its second-best-selling model globally. The updated U.S.-market XC40 is rated at a combined 27 mpg.. Featured image credit.
