WhatsApp to add native support for third-party AI agents

WhatsApp is developing native support for third-party AI agents, allowing users to connect bots directly to dedicated chats in the app, WABetaInfo reported.. Once a bot is set up, WhatsApp generates an API key that users can use to connect an external agent to that chat, according to WABetaInfo..

The feature would let users chat with the agent inside WhatsApp and send it instructions to carry out tasks. WABetaInfo said the setup steps vary by platform, but most services include a field where users can paste the API key.. The agent can read only messages shared in its specific chat and cannot access other conversations, contacts or media, WABetaInfo said..

Use is currently limited to one-on-one chats. Users cannot add the agents to group chats or communities at this stage, according to WABetaInfo.. WhatsApp also warns that AI agents may provide inaccurate responses and advises users to verify the information they receive..

Select Android users currently have access to the feature, and a broader rollout is expected soon, WABetaInfo reported.. WABetaInfo said WhatsApp supports up to five third-party agents per account and allows users to customize each one with a name and profile photo.. Chats with third-party agents are currently not end-to-end encrypted, WABetaInfo said..
