Nvidia partners with PreussenElektra to explore deployment of AI data centers at former nuclear sites in Germany

Germans energy firm PreussenElektra GmbH has teamed up with Nvidia to explore the possibility of setting up AI data centers at their previous nuclear power plants. E.ON’s subsidiary, PreussenElektra, is an expert in the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear power plants.

The collaboration between PreussenElektra and Nvidia aims to evaluate the current energy and site infrastructure, as well as the available land, to determine if they meet the technical and operational specifications needed for high-performance AI data centers. PreussenElektra stated that potential data center locations should have extensive industrial sites, high-capacity grid connections, and established infrastructure.

As part of the partnership, PreussenElektra will share its knowledge of the sites, infrastructure, and relevant conditions, while Nvidia will assess the requirements for AI data centers and explore potential technical site concepts. Once the two firms have assessed the situation, they will identify the websites that require further examination and establish the criteria for such evaluation.

These previous power plant locations possess significant industrial infrastructure and provide prospects for innovative, forward-looking applications. In collaboration with Nvidia, our goal is to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the potential and methods by which these circumstances can be utilized in the creation of AI facilities.

By doing this, we are merging the ethical reuse of our locations with fresh economic prospects for the areas,” said Guido Knott, chairman of the PEL Management Board. “AI factories need access to power, land, and high-capacity infrastructure, and previous industrial sites could serve as a solid foundation for this upcoming generation of computing,” included Markus Hacker, senior regional director at Nvidia. “Jointly with PreussenElektra, we will evaluate the capability of its locations to fulfill the technological and operational specifications of AI factories and aid in establishing Germany’s advanced AI framework.”. The corporations declared that the evaluation will be ongoing and serve as the initial phase in the appraisal procedure.

No particular investment or location choices have been finalized.
