US energy solutions firm Redaptive and energy optimization platform Recurve have launched a new solution they claim will greatly reduce data centers’ time to power.. As part of the partnership, Redaptive will support cooling optimization, HVAC upgrades, battery storage for peak shaving, and energy management systems inside data centers.. Outside the facility, the company will finance and deploy energy-efficiency retrofits, distributed generation such as solar and combined heat and power, and demand-response assets at commercial and industrial sites to free up grid capacity.. “Power is one of the biggest bottlenecks in data center growth right now,” said Arvin Vohra, CEO of Redaptive. “Everyone’s focused on new power sources, but a lot of the opportunity is already sitting inside the facilities they operate today.”.
Recurve will support the partnership via its Flex platform. According to Recurve, Flex is a software program that enables utilities, grid operators, and demand-response providers to treat demand flexibility as a measurable grid resource. Instead of directly controlling devices, the platform can measure and verify how much electricity customers actually save or shift using smart meter data.
For data centers, it will allow them to determine how effectively they can participate in demand response programs by forecasting where capacity can be freed up, allowing utilities to incorporate them into planning with confidence.. “The question is no longer simply where to build new infrastructure,” said Ben Mendelson, chief commercial officer of Recurve. “It’s how quickly we can create reliable capacity using available assets.”.
