Starling Bank to train transactional foundation model on Civo’s UK sovereign cloud platform

Starling, a challenger bank, is intending to develop an AI model with the aid of cloud infrastructure from Civo, a UK-based firm. The AI model will be trained using Nvidia equipment and will be predicated on a transactional foundation model (TFM) that is based on Starling’s proprietary data, which consists of more than 15 billion anonymized transactions.

It is anticipated that this will provide Starling with a deeper understanding of customer behavior and requirements, ultimately resulting in the establishment of a “Starling Intelligence” platform to develop innovative services. – Starling Bank. Civo’s cloud will host the training workloads, adhering to the UK Government’s Financial Services AI Adoption Plan, which cautions against relying on few large global providers.

The company has significantly advanced with its proprietary AI solutions, introducing the nation’s first agentic AI financial assistant and consistently deploying new capabilities weekly. Harriet Rees, the group CIO at Starling and the UK Government AI champion for financial services, stated that we desire to link these tools with a unified intelligence layer, which is trained completely based on the particular requirements of our clients.

In addition, we aim to assume a leadership position in the creation of indigenous cloud technology, which is crucial for European businesses to broaden their supplier base and minimize reliance on a single source. Mark Boost, CEO of Civo, stated that “AI will generate lasting economic benefits for the UK only if it is established on robust, reliable, and autonomous infrastructure.” Starling is at the forefront of the financial industry, having trained and deployed its Transactional Foundation Model on a locally developed cloud platform.

Combining Nvidia’s compute technology with Civo’s UK-based cloud platform demonstrates that financial institutions can maintain control over their data without compromising on performance or creativity, rather than relying on a limited number of international service providers.
