GCI to deploy Starlink bonded gateway in Alaska

Alaskan telecommunications company GCI is implementing Starlink satellite gateways to supply internet services for its customers. This month, the firm revealed plans to utilize Starlink’s specialized service, coupled with bonded gateways, to provide steadfast and dependable connectivity to numerous clients in various significant community centers, such as Bethel, Sitka, Kotzebue, and Dillingham. “We’ve always maintained that it requires all the resources in our arsenal to cater to a state like Alaska,” remarked Billy Wailand, SVP of corporate development at GCI. “By integrating Starlink’s top-tier bonded gateway features, which are fueled by low-Earth orbit satellites, we are incorporating a beneficial additional element of reliability that aligns with our current fiber, microwave, and satellite setup.

This pact fortifies our capacity to maintain Alaska’s connectivity during crucial times. GCI, established in 1979, is the largest communications provider in Alaska and operates as a subsidiary of Liberty Broadband. GCI offers data, mobile, voice, and managed services to customers in Alaska, including consumers, businesses, governments, and carriers.

Starlink’s bonded gateway service provides high-speed internet transit to other ISPs, requiring at least four radome-covered antennae. The service offers speeds of up to 10Gbps upload and download, with up to 20Gbps for more antennae. Previously unlisted, the gateways’ prices started at $75,000/Gbps per month with a one-time cost of $1.25 million.

Starlink has deployed community gateways in various locations, such as Unalaska, Alaska for OptimERA xG, and for other companies in Rwanda, Canada, Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati, Micronesia, Ecuador, and Indonesia. Further details on Connectivity. 9.
