Are US construction supply chains buckling under the weight of the AI revolution?

The text is just a mention of Getty Images, which is a well-known stock photography agency. It doesn’t require paraphrasing. Data centers experience an extraordinary increase in growth to fulfill the anticipated high demand, fueled by the advancements in artificial intelligence.

Lurking beneath these transactions and declarations is a possible catastrophe for the sector, as supply chains are overwhelmed by immense strain. In order to fulfill their objectives and responsibilities, companies embracing AI must construct data centers swiftly to guarantee adequate computing power to accommodate demand and secure a profit on their investments.

The worldwide desire for data center space is predicted to nearly triple by 2030, yet worldwide resource shortages are collaborating to postpone data center initiatives worldwide. The construction of power infrastructure, production of equipment, and pure-play construction materials are all experiencing shortages and supply problems.

The primary cause is the significant demand that exceeds the current supply. However, multiple contributing factors are intensifying the issue. The global supply chains were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic due to lockdowns and travel limitations, which led to a transition in workloads towards digital platforms and an increase in the adoption of cloud and remote work practices.

The rapid growth of AI workloads followed this event. Although the shortages experienced during the pandemic have decreased, the US continues to face significant supply problems. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on essential materials and components have caused delays in construction and led to substantial funds being invested in these projects.

Despite the Supreme Court deeming Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs unlawful, they were reinstated swiftly through an alternative statute. In this situation, even if a data center reaches completion, it could encounter additional challenges due to inadequate power grid infrastructure that requires its own development and enhancements.

Certainly, this entails elements and resources that are also scarce.
