Hyundai Heavy Industries signs 1GW natural gas engine supply deal with unnamed US data center developer

South Korean heavy equipment manufacturer Hyundai Heavy Industries has signed a deal with US energy infrastructure developer Corban Energy to supply 1GW of natural-gas generating capacity to power a data center in the US.. – HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The deal, worth a purported 956 billion won ($675.6 million), will see HHI supply Corban with its 9.6MW HiMSEN engines, which will then be used to power a data center being developed by an undisclosed technology company in the US..

The 9.6MW HiMSEN engines are HHI’s medium-sized offering, which the company claims are designed for power generation, with a focus on efficiency and reliability.. The deal is its biggest in the data center market so far. In April, it signed a 684MW deal with Aperion Energy Group, a Texas-based energy solutions developer for the data center market, worth an estimated $423.7m..

“Repeated inquiries from customers about collaboration in the data center power generation engine market show that the technology and reliability of our HiMSEN engines are being recognized,” an HD Hyundai official said.. “We will seek out a wide range of business opportunities to strengthen our position in the power generation equipment market.”.

Based out of Elmwood Park, New Jersey, Corban Energy is an energy infrastructure and natural gas firm. According to the partners, the deal will form the basis for a more extensive partnership.. While this is its second US data center deal, the wider Hyundai group has a long history with the sector, having announced several large-scale investment packages over the past few years to support AI development in South Korea.

In November, the company, alongside Samsung, announced around $400 billion in domestic investments in AI.. In February, the company said it planned to invest 10 trillion won ($7.5bn) in South Korea’s Saemangeum development zone, where it intends to build an integrated AI data center campus..
