Plans for a data center from Edged outside Mobile, Alabama, could be disrupted by a potential moratorium.. First reported by Fox, the Pritchard City Council last week discussed a proposed temporary moratorium on new permits for data centers.. – Google Maps. Council president Traci Hale introduced the resolution, which could pave the way for a 480-day moratorium.
If it is passed, it could impact data center firm Edged’s plans for a facility in the city. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.. Prichard is a city in Mobile County, near Alabama’s south coast.
News that Edged was planning a data center development there surfaced in April, but it has been in the works since last year.. The company aims to develop a $93 million facility at 214 Telegraph Road, near Africatown.. Full details haven’t been shared, but the site previously hosted a 911 data center.
Google Maps images suggest the site has been vacant since at least 2011.. The development is known as Project Gateway. Edged has set up a dedicated project website..
If it gets the go-ahead, ground could be broken on the new data center as early as late 2026.. At around 8MW, the site would be smaller than Edged’s other developments. The company has told press it would function primarily as a networking hub supporting Internet and communications infrastructure..
A Change.org petition against the project has gathered more than 4,200 signatures at time of writing.. Edged was set up by Aligned founder Jakob Carnemark. Edged’s US entity, Edged US, is also a portfolio company of Koch Real Estate Investments, according to Koch Inc.’s website..
