Blue Origin has been awarded a contract by NASA to develop the agency’s Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN).. Under the deal, Blue Origin will develop communications and navigation services through its Blue Ring space platform for the Mars missions of today and tomorrow. The contract has a maximum potential value of $700 million by the end of 2028..

The contract requires the Jeff Bezos-backed vendor to operationalize its Blue Ring in-space mobility platform in Martian orbit. Blue Ring was designed for a variety of mission applications, including space exploration. It essentially offers the manoeuvrability of an orbital transfer vehicle (OTV), capable of 3,000-4,000 meters per second of Delva-V using a solar-electric and chemical propulsion system (SEP-Chem), with the payload capacity of a satellite, offering 12 ESPA Grande radial ports and one large forward port, accommodating over 4,000kg of payload..
Blue Origin’s selection followed NASA’s request for proposals for Mars telecommunications issued this May. The agency also seriously considered a proposal response by Rocket Lab. With the Blue Ring already developed for beyond-Earth missions exactly like this, with a prototype flown on the New Glenn rocket in January 2025, Blue Origin had a big lead in the competition..
Given the investment and polish Rocket Lab put into its own conception of a Mars Telecommunications Network, and the level of communications demand predicted across the 2030s and 2040s for Martian communications and navigation, it seems likely Peter Beck’s company will also field its own Martian telco platform someday.. NASA’s existing hardware for this task includes the Mars Odyssey launched in 2001 and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter from 2005.
