Citylink to supply waste heat from data center servers to district heating network in Wrocław, Poland

Property developer Citylink has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with a local power plant to use waste heat from its data center to power a district heating network in Wrocław, western Poland.. If built, the system will capture heat from Citylink’s 24MW Wrocław Stadion data center – still under construction – and siphon it into the municipal district heating network..

When approached for comment, a spokesperson for the firm told DCD that the system is still in its design and development stages, and it was therefore unable to provide an estimate for its cost or completion.. “We are consistently seeking new heat sources that can support the transformation of Wrocław’s heating system,” said Dariusz Witkowski, president of the management board for Kogeneracja, the local power plant operator..

“Our collaboration with Citylink is another step in developing projects utilizing waste heat. It confirms the growing role of digital infrastructure in creating a modern, energy-efficient economy. This solution allows for more efficient use of locally available energy.”. – CityLink.

Citylink is a property developer based in Warsaw, central Poland. The firm owns and operates four business parks in the country, including a hybrid office, warehouse, and data center complex outside Wrocław. A CityLink spokesperson confirmed to DCD that the data center’s primary user will be Nokia, which will test broadband data transmission technologies at the site..

Though the facility is still under construction, Citylink said it had been planned so that the heat reuse system can be scaled up should the premises be extended in the future. Additionally, said Citylink’s development director Michał Starybrat, the project would afford the firm “valuable experience in designing and operating modern data centers, with a particular focus on infrastructure dedicated to AI nodes.”.

Wrocław is a relatively small data center market in Poland, with five facilities listed by DataCenterMap.. However, Citylink’s agreement to supply waste heat to the city’s municipal heating network is not the first deal of its kind. In July, the Wrocław University of Science and Technology also signed an LOI with Kogeneracja, committing to building a heat reuse system from servers in its Center for Networking and Supercomputing..

As in the deal with Citylink, no details were released on the expected cost or completion date for the project.. Learn more about the data center market in Poland and Eastern Europe, and meet with other executives and experts from the region at the DCN Warsaw event later this year..
