Damac and Vodafone Türkiye triple Izmir data center project budget

Damac Digital and Vodafone Türkiye have cut the ribbon at the build out of the planned Izmir data center in Izmir; a city in western Turkey on the coast of the Aegean Sea.. The data center was first announced by Damac and Vodafone back in 2024 as part of a $100 million data center project.. – Vodafone.

However, this week, Damac Digital (previously Edgnex) confirmed that total investment in the facility it set to reach $300 million, triple the initial budget.. The facility itself had been due to go live during Q1 of last year, but has cost more than initially expected.. It will become Vodafone’s second data center in Izmir and sixth in the country overall.

Vodafone already has two in Istanbul and one each in Izmir, Ankara, and Adana.. According to Damac and Vodafone, the telco’s second data center in Izmir will be the biggest data center in the Aegean region.. The facility will initially deliver 4MW of capacity, with plans to eventually reach 20MW.

The data center is set to span 7,500 sqm (80,729 sq ft), and accommodate more than 650 cabinets.. When the project was first announced in 2024, the initial plan put forward by the two companies was that the carrier-neutral facility would initially offer 6MW across 13,500 sqm (145,310 sq ft), expandable to 12MW..

“This project builds on Vodafone Türkiye’s long-term investment in the country’s digital future. Serving more than 25 million mobile customers, millions of SMEs, and thousands of large enterprises, our belief in Türkiye’s potential has never wavered,” said Engin Aksoy, CEO of Vodafone Türkiye.. “Delivered in just one and a half years, Izmir Data Center stands as a powerful demonstration of this commitment.

This facility will not only scale Vodafone’s infrastructure but also reinforce Türkiye’s cloud capabilities and data sovereignty, fueling the critical data processing and AI needs of businesses.”. Hussain Sajwani, founder of Damac Group and chairman of Damac Digital, added: “As artificial intelligence, cloud computing and data-driven technologies reshape economies, advanced digital infrastructure will be fundamental to national competitiveness, innovation and sustainable growth.

Bringing together Vodafone Türkiye’s deep local capabilities with Damac Digital’s global expertise, we are helping to build the resilient, future-ready infrastructure that will power Türkiye’s next chapter.”. Damac Digital, formerly known as Edgnex, was founded in 2021 by Hussain Sajwani and began operations with a 12MW campus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia..
