Empyrion tops out upcoming Malaysian data center in Johor

APAC data center firm Empyrion has topped out its upcoming facility in Johor, Malaysia.. The Singapore-based data center company shared progress updates on its Malaysian data center campus on LinkedIn, located in the city of Nusajaya, Johor, southern Malaysia.. As well as being topped out, the data center’s superstructure has been completed, with further construction on Phase I in progress..

Empyrion shared that it was on track for the two-story 40MW capacity first phase building to be ready for service (RFS) in Q1 2027. This follows the firm’s announcement of its initial plans for the Johor data center campus (MY1) in December 2025. The new RFS has been pushed back from initial targets of Q4 2026..

The MY1 data center campus will comprise five buildings, each 40MW, constructed over five phases with a targeted total capacity of more than 200MW. It will provide 158,000 sqm (1.7 million sq ft) of colocation space on a 34.9-acre site.. Empyrion has already secured 145MW of initial power for MY1, supported by Memorandums of Understanding’s (MoUs) with providers such as Malaysian electrical utility company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

The data center facilities will feature both air and liquid cooling.. MY1 – Empyrion Digital. Founded in 2021, Empyrion Digital’s portfolio of operational and in-development data centers spans six Asian countries.

The developer currently has two operational facilities: a 7.7MW data center in Dodid, Singapore, and a 29.4MW facility in Ganham, South Korea. Empyrion was formed as a portfolio company of Singapore-based infrastructure investment fund Seraya Partners.. Seraya Partners is an independent private equity firm focused on energy transition and digital infrastructure.

Across its funds and co-investment vehicles, it has $2.5 billion in assets under management (AUM).. The state of Johor, Malaysia, is one of Asia’s fastest-growing data center markets and has ~80 percent of Malaysia’s operational data center capacity, totaling 1.11GW of live IT capacity.

However, in late December, it halted approval of many types of data centers over concerns about the volume of water usage by such facilities.. Data center restrictions across Malaysia have increased, with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on February 24 informing the Dewan Rakyat (the Malaysian government House of Representatives) that applications for new non-AI data centers would be stopped..
