Capcom will use AI to speed up game development

Capcom plans to use artificial intelligence to speed up game development as part of an upgrade to its proprietary RE Engine outlined at a company conference.. The engine will undergo a major improvement project called REX, as first reported by GameBiz and IGN. The project aims to eventually make RE Engine a “game engine of the AI generation.”.

Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida said at the conference that AI would mainly help streamline development workflows. Games and their assets have become much larger, leading to longer development times, he said.. Capcom previously said during a shareholders’ meeting question-and-answer session that it would explore AI assistance for graphics, sound and programming.

The company explicitly ruled out using AI-generated content in its games.. Capcom also wants to revive older franchises following the success of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.. Epic Games said earlier this year that it would incorporate Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine for game development..
