UK budget: Grid connection incentives for data centers under new “covenant”

The UK Chancellor, John Healey, has introduced a British Data Center Covenant which mandates operators to invest in the local community, create employment opportunities, and safeguard water resources. In exchange for adherence, essential data centers will be granted priority grid connections and authorization to construct new on-site power generation during the waiting period, as stated in his budget speech for 2026, delivered today. – Getty Images.

As per the chancellor, the pact will aid in the progression of data centers in Britain, which is essential for the government to fulfill its AI and national security objectives. The chancellor emphasized the need for the government to seize opportunities while also protecting against potential risks.

He affirmed that we are currently leading the world in AI safety and security, and the budget today supports this with an additional 500 million pounds. “Founded on supremacy and safety, my aim is to guarantee that British citizens can take advantage of the significant positive aspects of AI.”. “The importance of the state’s role is evident everywhere.”. Certain UK data center operators have expressed positive reactions to the recent news.

Gary Watson, the managing director of Stellanor, a UK-based operator, praised the data center covenant as a satisfactory agreement. “Every choice in our industry is influenced by grid capacity, and we can’t continuously construct data centers while relying on the grid and local areas to accommodate us,” he clarified. Operators must acquire their position by means of local employment and abilities, prudent water utilization, sustainable energy sources, and authentic interaction with their neighbors.
