ASC cable break causes connectivity disruption between Perth and Singapore

A major cable break in Vocus’ Australia-Singapore Cable (ASC) subsea cable has caused disruption to connectivity between Perth, Australia, to Singapore.. The break was first acknowledged by Vocus on Friday (September 4), though the break is still causing issues as of today (September 7), as confirmed via Vocus’ outages page..

26 Aug 2021. Launched in 2018, the 4,600km (2,858 miles) ASC connects Australia to Christmas Island, Jakarta, and Singapore.. Vocus noted that it was able to detect a fault condition on the ASC impacting traffic between Perth and Singapore last Friday.

This led to Wavelength and Ethernet services becoming unavailable, while Internet traffic has been rerouted via other paths.. “The fault appears to be a subsea cable fault in Indonesian waters,” said the company.. The cause of the fault has not been disclosed, though Vocus said it’s working closely with its marine repair partner to progress repair readiness activities, while planning for the repair of the ASC is underway.. “Vocus is working closely with its marine repair partner to progress repair readiness activities.

This includes technical review of the latest diagnostic results, confirmation of the required spare materials, and coordination of the necessary permits and regulatory approvals,” said Vocus today in its most recent update.. The company added that it will provide its next update on September 11..

It’s not the first time the ASC cable has suffered a major break. Back in 2021, a Maersk ship captain was arrested and charged after allegedly damaging the cable, though the case was later dropped against the captain.. More in Subsea Infrastructure.
